Our dear friend, former Tidepooler, and amazing contributor to the Loop community Katie DiSimone has been diagnosed with Glioblastoma (GBM). Ever the advocate for radical transparency, Katie has been sharing her journey across her social media feeds, providing incredible detail about her diagnosis, treatment, and efforts to access every single image collected by her various MRIs.
In her own words, “This is not a cancer that has a ‘remission’ potential. Even if they had gotten 100% of the tumor out, it regrows because of its tentacles unseen that spread. It has awful survival rates for the 5 year mark. We’ve been told 3 years average. (God that’s still so hard to type).”
This is shocking and painful news. Like many of you, we are feeling lots of emotions right now.
Katie’s impact on the diabetes community is immeasurable. Her contributions to the #WeAreNotWaiting movement are a cornerstone of a passionate movement to advance the conversation about what is possible in the world of diabetes technology.
Quite simply, without Katie’s efforts, Tidepool Loop, and Tidepool as we know it today would not exist. We are forever indebted to her, and want to do everything we can to support her and her family.
For those of you who are able, the community has created a GoFundMe in the spirit of the pay-it-forward mentality that Katie inspires in so many of us.
