Greetings!
We are happy to report that Tidepool is now a completely official, government-certified 501c3 Non-Profit. Last week we received our IRS 501c3 determination letter.
(Pause for dramatic effect.)
This alone is a very big deal. But wait, there’s more: We also received a $300,000 matching pledge from the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation. Which means that right now, you can make a tax-deductible donation to Tidepool and the impact of your donation will be doubled.
As we’ve written about previously, being a non-profit is key to our mission of helping to reduce the burden for people with T1D. We are not in this for the money. We are in this to help the industry move forward, to liberate data, and to enable an ecosystem of applications that help make managing this horribly burdensome disease just a little bit easier.
We applied for non-profit status with the IRS back in June 2013, so it’s been almost exactly one year to get approval. We are nothing if not patient. A huge THANK YOU goes to the Joslin Diabetes Center. Earlier this year when it looked like we might still be a year or more away from getting our 501c3 status, we looked for a non-profit partner whose mission was aligned with ours. Joslin stepped up, and was able to accept tax-deductible donations and grant them to us in support of our charitable mission. Thank you, Joslin! We could not be more thankful for your support and help these last few months.
So please, now is the time: Tell your friends. Pass it along. Blog. Tweet. Like us on FB. Help us get the word out. And of course, please click “donate” yourself.
Your financial support will help us deliver the Tidepool Platform, Blip, Nutshell and much more. Your support will help us show the world that non-profit and open source development can deliver regulatory-worthy software.
You’ll be sending a loud and clear message to the entire industry: We believe that patients own their own data. We believe that we should be able to use whatever applications we want to manage our diabetes. We believe that software should be intuitive, actionable and should just work. And #WeAreNotWaiting.
Thanks again for all of your support.
Sincerely,Howard and the entire Tidepool Team
PS: As you may have seen on our donate page you can donate with a credit card (they take a 3% cut). Or you can donate by mailing us a check (no fees). And yes, you can even donate Bitcoin... We’re big fans. Open source. Maintains a cryptographically secure chain of transactions. Minuscule fees (if any). What’s not to love?
